Some situations in life transcend language, defying expression through words. The depths of human emotion, particularly in the face of loss, often leave words feeling inadequate.

This piece is a physical expression of deep feelings, a movement based exploration of liberation that emerges from grief.

This experimental sound and movement piece is an unending rhythm grounded in depth and renewal, where every step contributes to a broader purpose that symbolizes a continuous journey of growth, transformation, and progress that transcends time. It reflects the steady path one takes through life’s cycles, emphasizing patience, perseverance, and the interconnectedness of past, present, and future. This work carries a connotation of strength, resilience, and the ability to overcome. This work is open to production support, residency support and coproduction.

Omijé – tear in Yoruba language – was born from the meeting between the French performer and vocalist Violaine Lochu, the Beninese singer and percussionist Folly Azaman and the Nigerian bassist Tosin Oyebisi (Oluwatosin Oyee). From the figure of the mourner, present in West Africa as it was recently in southern Europe, these three musicians with eclectic universes bring their respective musical cultures into resonance to explore the notion of lamentation; Yoruba, mina or fon funeral songs intersect with noisy, minimalist and rock sounds, in an immersive and intense project in which improvisation and experimentation hold a large place. Omijé Concert is 50 mins with the support of Centre-Lobozounkpa (Benin); Studio Emmanuel, Cotonou (Benin); National Center for Musical Creation Césaré, Reims (France); La Cartonnerie, Reims, (France); Dynamo/ Blue Suburbs, Pantin (France). Freedom has become an illusion but there must be that deliberate and continuous emancipation by unlearning, learning, colonizing, and decolonizing.

That constant change is essential as there is an ongoing war and the battlefield is the mind.

The individual and the community act in harmony and are connected throughout time and space, which is demonstrated through generational equivalence. This self-similarity is reflected in the aphorism: “a person is a person through other persons.” It is therefore understood that a person is the physical embodiment of the past, present, and future communities.
